Thoracic Surgery
UT Southwestern Medical Center provides diagnostic and therapeutic techniques available to effectively treat pulmonary hypertension. Our lung specialists have the knowledge and experience needed to use the advanced pulmonary function tests, electrocardiogram assessments, echocardiogram, cardiac MRI and cardiac catheterization procedures including vasodilation testing to determine the right course of action for treatment.
Tests and Exams
Because pulmonary hypertension may be determined by familial history, as opposed to a related disorder or unknown cause, UT Southwestern provides genetic testing and counseling to help determine the source of the condition. A team of lung specialists will work together with cardiologists to find the cause of pulmonary hypertension.
Treatment
UT Southwestern’s pulmonologists are experts at prescribing the right therapy to treat pulmonary hypertension. Our lung specialists have extensive experience using endothelin receptor antagonists, phosphodiesterase inhibitors, and prostacyclins for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension. In addition, patients can participate in a variety of clinical trials aimed at treating pulmonary hypertension.
Pulmonary hypertension may be attributable to congenital heart disease, emphysema, systemic lupus, as well as other factors, and a UT Southwestern pulmonologist will carefully discuss and work with patients to determine the right course of action for each particular condition.
In addition, depending upon the specific situation and the precise nature of the condition, our surgeons are widely recognized as leaders in lung transplantation to treat pulmonary hypertension.
Patient Education
An emphasis on team-based medicine ensures that patients have access to the expertise needed to accurately diagnose and treat pulmonary hypertension. UT Southwestern’s lung specialists have the knowledge and medical resources needed to precisely determine the best diagnosis and treatment, and we offer the most advanced health-care options available in a caring and compassionate environment.
