Oncology Imaging :: About Our Program

The Oncology Imaging Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center is dedicated to studying and treating cancer through the use of innovative imaging and proven effective methodologies.

UT Southwestern is at the forefront of using positron emission tomography (PET) for identifying whether a patient has cancer, whether that cancer is spreading or responding to treatment, and whether the patient has gone into remission after treatment. PET scanning is particularly effective for a variety of cancers, including lymphoma, melanoma, brain, breast, head and neck, lung, gastrointestinal, and gynecological cancer.

Our radiology service also offers various procedures for not just diagnosing, but also treating cancers. We are one of only two facilities in Dallas to offer Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIR-Spheres) for liver cancer. This procedure uses microscopic beads containing radioactive material that is injected through a catheter to target liver tumors. We offer palliative treatments for painful bone cancer metastases and targeted “salvage therapy” treatments for non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Radioactive iodine (I-131) is a well established and effective treatment for thyroid cancer.
