UT Southwestern Medical Center provides effective rehabilitation therapies for patients with spinal cord injuries. For many patients, rehabilitation care from spinal cord injuries begins with a carefully coordinated transition from UT Southwestern’s intensive care unit (ICU) to the rehabilitation program.
Our spinal cord injury rehabilitation center offers important benefits by helping reduce complications, as well as reduce length of stay in the hospital. When the patient’s condition is stabilized, occupational and physical therapists begin a rehabilitation program that is designed for each individual’s specific situation. Along with physicians who are specialists in spinal cord injuries, the rehabilitation team includes nurses, neuropsychologists, psychologists and social workers.
The goals of spinal cord injury rehabilitation include helping patients adapt to their condition, adjust to daily activities and gain increased levels of function and independence. Our medical staff extends a wide variety of services to family members as well as patients, including psychological counseling, support groups and educational programs that can address all questions about spinal cord injuries and rehabilitation.
UT Southwestern’s multidisciplinary team approach enables our patients to benefit from a comprehensive program. Patients who have received the expert and compassionate care at UT Southwestern have realized valuable benefits during their rehabilitation, including addressing the adaptive changes that can contribute to an improved quality of life.
