Breast Surgery :: About Our Program

About Our Program | Our Physicians | Patient Education Materials | Support Groups and Resources

UT Southwestern Medical Center is a leader in the field of breast cancer treatment and research. The Breast Care Center integrates radiology services, surgical and medical oncology, plastic/reconstructive surgery, and radiation oncology services in one facility.

The center’s expert physicians have a longstanding commitment to women’s health and are dedicated to providing the latest in modern medical services in a caring, nurturing environment. Our team approach coordinates state-of-the-art technology, surgical methods, radiation therapy and research studies to provide patients with accurate diagnoses and personalized treatment plans.

The Breast Care Center offers patients access to the most technologically advanced techniques available, including minimally invasive sentinel node biopsy, 3-D digital mammography, high-resolution breast ultrasound, magnetic resonance mammography (MRM) and stereotactic breast biopsy guidance.

Our Lymphedema Program offers an innovative and comprehensive clinical practice for the prevention and treatment of lymphedema after breast cancer surgery and surgery for other cancers. And our Surveillance unit carefully monitors patients who require close follow-up for the earliest signs of cancer.

Research studies are integral to our program. For example:

  • The center was an active participant in the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project Breast Cancer Prevention Trial that found tamoxifen reduced the risk of developing breast cancer by 45 percent.
  • The center is a research site for the second generation breast cancer prevention trial — the STAR Trial. The Mary L. Brown Breast Cancer Genetics and Risk Assessment Program uses a computer-generated program to calculate the risk of a patient developing breast cancer based upon genetic profile and other risk factors. This gives patients invaluable knowledge from which to make decisions on preventive care.

Most notably, our dedication to providing expert and compassionate care makes an important difference in our patients’ treatment and changes their outlook on the future. UT Southwestern physicians show patients how they can achieve a renewed state of health they may have not thought possible.
