Sarcoma/Melanoma :: About Our Program

About Our Program | Our Physicians | Patient Education Materials | Support Groups and Resources

UT Southwestern Medical Center is an established leader in the treatment for sarcoma and melanoma. Unfortunately, skin cancer is becoming more and more common, especially in the Southwest ― where the abundant sunshine increases exposure.

Our team of physicians has experience in recognizing, diagnosing and treating a variety of skin cancers.

Patients with skin growths, atypical lesions or changing moles are evaluated by an experienced team of physicians who collaborate to determine the best course of action. Treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, interferon therapy and experimental therapy.

Research is also fundamental to our physicians’ work. UT Southwestern’s faculty has been working on an immunotherapy trial for the treatment of patients with high risk melanoma, in which we’ve studied the ability of a whole cell melanoma vaccine to prevent recurrence of melanoma in patients following surgery. In addition, the use of positron emission tomography (PET) scanning is being investigated as a method for early detection of distant metastases in this disease.

UT Southwestern’s comprehensive medical resources enable patients to have an initial consultation, testing, follow-up visits and any needed medical procedures all in one location.
