Transplantation can be a beneficial option for many patients with diseased or damaged corneas. The operation can restore vision and prevent blindness.
UT Southwestern Medical Center also transplants other eye-area tissues such as the sclera (the white part of the eye). Sclera transplants can preserve the structure of the eye and help stabilize pressure inside the eye, which greatly helps patients with glaucoma or congenital deformities.
Eyelids that are not functioning properly can be improved with a fascia transplant, which can help repair the eyelid.
